Eco Soco Hedgehog Highways

NEWS FLASH…

Want to help endangered hedgehogs access your garden but need help creating a hedgehog hole in your fence? Want to reduce the number of slugs destroying your prize plants? A CD sized hole in your garden fence is the answer!

We have a small but perfectly formed team of skilled volunteers who can create a neat, discreet hedgehog hole for you! To register your interest please contact: ecoscocharles@gmail.com

Now an update from Charles (SC Hedgehog Hero)

We now have 79 properties mapped with confirmed hedgehog highways, connecting to a further 219 other properties and greenspaces.  That is a total area of 160,000 square meters of hedgehog roaming space.  The equivalent of 22 football pitches.

From a survey conducted at the 2025 Village Day, most people said they saw either the same number or fewer sightings of hedgehogs than the previous year. That may have been due to the unusually warm and dry Spring and Summer. We have also had reports of poison being put out for other animals like rats and squirrels, which hedgehogs have sadly eaten.  So it is even more important in 2026 to help the hedgehog population to encourage numbers to bounce back.   If you would like to join the Hedgehog Highways scheme to create gaps and tunnels between our gardens or help with other hedgehog activities, please get in touch.

Here are some things you can do to continue our work for our prickly friends:

1. Promote Hedgehog Highways by asking your friends in the village to join the scheme.  They can contact me on this email address.

2. We will be offering new HH participants (who need it) free assistance to make gaps in their fences or tunnels beneath. If you are fairly handy and would like to volunteer to assist, please let me know. Tools and materials provided.

3. Log your hedgehog sightings (dead or alive) at www.hedgehogstreet.org

4. Please send me your hedgehog videos and photos as they are great for promotional content.

5. Learn more about hedgehog conservation with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.  Links to a couple of very informative recent YouTube videos below.
